Witness at the Gate

about

The role of the one who watches is something that isn’t often thought about. But think for a moment of seeing all that can go wrong, and being unable to intervene beyond perhaps holding up a light.

And that role is a valid one, sometimes we need to get through things on our own, but having a witness, to know our battles are seen and acknowledged can be strengthening. It can be a reminder that we matter, and we are capable enough that a witness is sometimes all that is needed.

lyrics

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

Watching you slide is the hardest thing to let happen
Watching you hemorrhaging light as you sink below
An angel falls to the sound of the weeping skies
Another bringer of hope is lost to the endless show

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

We all make our choices
We are who we chose to be
Those who choose to fall I witness
For the sake of a memory

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

And I can hold the line
(but it does no good, does no good, does no good)
If you’re happy where you are
And I can light your path
(If you cared to see, cared to see, cared to see)
But I won’t be a falling star

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

They’ll tell you there’s no going back
And it’s true you can’t undo
But there is always room for change
At each new choice to change the view

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

And I can hold the line
(but it does no good)
If you’re happy where you are
And I can light your path
(If you cared to see)
But I won’t be a falling star

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

I’m no devil at the crossroads
It’s not for me to choose your fate
I’m no angel to stand judgement
I’m but the witness at the gate

(Apathy, action, friendship, greed)
(Compassion, power, knowledge, need)

And I can sing you home
(If you listen hard)
When you open up your ears
And I can offer hope
(If you don’t shut it out)
While you’re trapped inside your fear

And I can hold the line
(but it does no good)
If you’re happy where you are
And I can light your path
(If you cared to see)
But I won’t be a falling star
